Review of Cancer Therapy with AHCC and GCP: The Long-Term Follow-Up over 12 Years for Stage IV (M1) Cancer of the Lung and the Breast

Abstract:
AHCC and GCP have been used for 34 stage IV breast cancer patients who were enrolled under individual Evidence Based Medicine (EBM). Long-term follow-up for 12 years from 1996 to 2009 has been carried out.

Results / Conclusion:

  • 22 of 34 patients passed away and 12 patients are alive.
  • Cumulative survival rate of 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 4-year and 5-year are 100.0%, 84.4%, 68.3%, 47.9% and 36.8%, respectively. Median survival terms were 47.86 months.
  • This study suggests that AHCC and GCP could contribute to the extension of survival terms and improved QOL on breast cancer therapy.

AHCC Breast Cancer Research #2: Dosage, Clinical Study, Results.

Source:
International Journal of Immunotherapy

Topic:
Does AHCC have immunomodulatory and anti-cancer effects in cancer patients?

Abstract:
11 cancer patients with advanced malignancies were treated with AHCC for up to 17 months. Tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) for each type of malignancy was measured prior to AHCC treatment and at 3- to 40-week intervals. Natural killer (NK) cell activity was also monitored.

AHCC Dosage:
3 grams of AHCC per day.

Results:

Supplementation with AHCC showed positive clinical results with:

  • A significant decline in TAA occurred in 8 out of the 11 patients with different types of malignancies.
  • Breast cancer patients shows 33% (1 out of 3) complete remission rate, and 2 out of 3 partial.
  • Significant decline in the level of PSA in 2 out of 3 (66%) prostate cancer patients.
  • CA 125 levels in 2 out of 3 (66%) ovarian cancer patients decreased as early as 1 to 2 months and reached normal levels within 1 to 4 months.
  • 1 out of 2 (50%) multiple myeloma patients had significant reduction in BJP level.
  • In vitro studies showed that AHCC possesses suppressive effects on tumor cell growth.

Conclusion:
The high augmentory effect of AHCC and the absence of notable side effects make AHCC a promising immunotherapeutic agent for the treatment of cancer patients.

Topic:
Enhancement of NK Cell Activity in Cancer Patients by Active Hemicellulose Compound (AHCC)

Abstract:
Patients with rhabdomyosarcoma multiple myeloma and breast cancer were given AHCC, then NK cell cytotoxicity was measured using K562 tumor cells as targets.

Dosage:
3 and 6 grams per day 2 weeks.

Results / Conclusion:
Treatment with AHCC demonstrated significant enhancement in NK anticancer activity for breast cancer (93%) and for multiple myeloma (87%). In addition, 2-3 fold elevation of NK populations was also observed in both patients.

It is concluded that AHCC has the potential to reduce the severity of neutropenia induced by breast cancer chemotherapy and the use of G-CSF during chemotherapy.

Effect of Active Hexose-Correlated Compound in Women Receiving Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer: A Retrospective Study

Abstract:
41 women who were treated with Anthracyclines and Taxanes (therapies used as first-line chemotherapy treatments breast cancer patients but often associated with significant toxicity and side effects) at Nagumo Clinic in Tokyo from October 2004 to March 2011 were selected for this study, to explore the beneficial effects of AHCC on adverse events in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Results / Conclusion:
Comparing the occurrence of adverse events in patients who received AHCC with those who did not receive AHCC (as control group) – the AHCC group had significantly fewer neutrophil-related events, alongside significantly lower use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

It is concluded that AHCC has the potential to reduce the severity of neutropenia induced by breast cancer chemotherapy and the use of G-CSF during chemotherapy.

Best AHCC Supplement Brands and Dosage Review

Just as the clinical studies above that primarily used 3 grams AHCC dose daily –

the International Journal of Clinical Medicine also have similar dosage recommendation that “AHCC up to 3 grams is safe to administer and definitely helps cancer patients in reducing side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs“.

For 3 grams, i.e. 3000 milligrams (mg) daily – based on the best AHCC supplement brands below for examples:

Take 6 capsules (500mg) daily, 3 times a day.
I.e. Total 3 grams a day taken on an empty stomach, 1 hour before food.

AHCC Breast Cancer: User Forum Reviews, Results, Testimonials.

  • carolwxyz99, commented at Phoenix Rising:

..I have been on AHCC for about 2-3 years now – taking 2000-3000 mg a day. I developed breast cancer on top of my ME/CFS and most integrative cancer docs suggest mushrooms as cancer prevention. I am sensitive to many moulds and fungi and could not tolerate many of the mushroon products but I have been fine with AHCC. The only other mushroom I can tolerate is reishi mushroom when it is boiled with chinese herbs (I can’t tolerate reishi in powder or a tincture). I am very sensitive to products which boost the immune system as they tend to make me flu-like, and usually respond better to immune modulators. I am, however, fine with AHCC – it has not stimulated my immune system in the wrong way.

Breast Cancer Treatment and Survival Rate / Life Expectancy by Stage

Breast cancer is curable if detected early. Besides the treatment options, most patients wish to know the breast cancer prognosis “calculator” however the life expectancy depend on many factors, including the age etc as shown in the infographic at the end of this post.

Stage 0 Breast Cancer

There are 2 types of Stage 0 breast cancer, which is a non-invasive precancerous condition at the earliest stage of breast cancer:

  • Lobular Carcinoma In Situ (LCIS) where abnormal cells start growing in lobules, the milk-producing glands at the end of breast ducts. Generally not considered as cancer, but women who develop LCIS has 20% to 25% risk of getting invasive cancer over 15 years after initial diagnosis.
  • Some doctors may not recommend any treatment for Stage 0 LCIS, and the patient only requires close observations with yearly mammogram and breast exam to watch for breast cancer signs.

Some doctors may prescribe Tamoxifen hormone medication to reduce the risk of breast cancer, while breast-conserving surgery Lumpectomy may be recommended to remove abnormal cells and normal tissues nearby.

  • Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) where abnormal cells are found in the lining of the breast milk duct. If left untreated, DCIS can become invasive and spread to surrounding breast tissue.
  • DCIS treatment wise, doctors may recommended Lumpectomy only, Lumpectomy combined with radiation therapy, or Mastectomy to surgically remove breast(s).

According to American Cancer Society, 5 year breast cancer survival rate of stage 0 is close to 100%.

Stage 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 Breast Cancer

Treatment options of breast cancer from stage 1 to stage 3 may include:

  • Surgery: Lumpectomy to remove abnormal cells, or Mastectomy to surgically remove breast.
  • Radiation Therapy: Uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors.
  • Chemotherapy: Drug therapy to kill cancer cells, stopping them from spreading, or slow their growth.
  • Hormone Therapy: Drugs like blockers or inhibitors that destroy cancer cells by cutting off their hormone supply.

Stage 4 breast cancer patient may be treated with chemotherapy (and radiation), hormone therapy, and/or targeted therapy with trastuzumab (Herceptin) to stop the protein from making the cancer cells grow. This is for breast cancer patient with too much of a protein known as HER2.
