Chemotherapy works by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells, which grow and divide quickly. The renowned Wiley Online Library pointed out that:

• For patients with stage III and some stage II colon cancers, surgery is followed by approximately 6 months of chemotherapy to lower the risk of recurrence.
• Chronic lymphocytic leukemia is generally treated with multiagent chemotherapy (81%)

 
According to the American Cancer Society, the benefit and results of chemotherapy is dependent on multiple factors, including the size of the tumor, the presence of hormone receptors (ER or PR), the number of lymph nodes involved, and the amount of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) protein made by the cancer cells.

Many cancer patients take nutraceuticals and botanical medicines in conjunction with conventional chemotherapy, in the hope of enhancing the therapeutic effect and minimizing side effects.

For instance, Active hexose correlated compound (AHCC) is a complex of several alpha glucans unique to the Lentinula species of mushrooms, with immune-enhancing effects in humans.

As reported by the World Journal of Clinical Oncology, AHCC can increase production of tumor necrosis factor alpha, reduce side effects of conventional cancer treatments, decrease alopecia resulting from chemotherapy, and reduce the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Effect of Active Hexose-Correlated Compound in Women Receiving Adjuvant Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer: A Retrospective Study

Abstract:
41 women who were treated with Anthracyclines and Taxanes (therapies used as first-line chemotherapy treatments breast cancer patients but often associated with significant toxicity and side effects) at Nagumo Clinic in Tokyo from October 2004 to March 2011 were selected for this study, to explore the beneficial effects of AHCC on adverse events in patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer.

Results / Conclusion:
Comparing the occurrence of adverse events in patients who received AHCC with those who did not receive AHCC (as control group) – the AHCC group had significantly fewer neutrophil-related events, alongside significantly lower use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.

It is concluded that AHCC has the potential to reduce the severity of neutropenia induced by breast cancer chemotherapy and the use of G-CSF during chemotherapy.

The Beneficial Effect of Active Hexose Correlated Compound (AHCC), A Health Food Component, In Patients With Pancreatic or Biliary Tract Cancer Who Underwent Chemotherapy

Abstract:
This study from Dec 2007 to Jan 2009 involved 73 patients aged 20 to 80 years old with pancreatic or biliary cancer who underwent chemotherapy with gemcitabine, split into AHCC group consisted 37 patients and control group consisted 36 patients. Adverse effects were monitored according to the National Cancer Institute Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events version 3.0.

Results / Conclusion:
The hermoglobin level and serum albumin after chemotherapy in AHCC group was significantly higher in control group, while the c-reactive protein level and taste alteration after chemotherapy in AHCC group was significantly lower in control group.

It is concluded that AHCC could alleviate side effects of chemotherapy and that the nutritional state during chemotherapy can be maintained by improving the taste alteration.
